On this Sunday, Fr. Chris Reuter recounts the story of the Scarlet Letter, and how it was filled with hypocrisy of the people that accused the Puritan woman of adultery, even though they claimed to be “proper” and “not guilty.”
In John’s Gospel today, we have the same situation, with Jesus being tested by the “righteous” elders. Jesus handled it deftly and skillfully, leading to a situation of mercy.
We need to be aware of our own obligation to be signs of mercy in this world. Rather than discuss who needs to be “punished and stoned,” we should discuss and be examples of showing forgiveness and mercy.
