The name of God is mercy. Fr. Carl Scherrer discusses this in the context of the parable of prodigal son. Unless we are aware of our sin, we cannot open our hearts to mercy. This is why we need the sacrament of reconciliation. In this sacrament, God embraces us and his love is not diminished. His mercy is bountiful and always greater than all of our sins. God wants to put the finest robe on us, and a ring on our finger, symbolizing a relationship being restored.
